How to Convert iPhone HEIC Photos to JPG

Updated:

You pick a photo from your iPhone, the website says the file type is not supported, and the file name ends in .heic. HEIC is the format iPhones use by default because it takes about half the space of a JPG, but many upload forms and older programs still accept only JPG or PNG.

Convert in the browser

  1. 1Open the Image Converter and add your HEIC photos. You can add up to 20 at once.
  2. 2Keep JPG selected as the output format.
  3. 3Set the quality. 90 is a good balance; lower it only if you need smaller files.
  4. 4Press Convert, then download the files one by one or all together.

Your photos stay on your device

The conversion runs inside your browser. The photos are not uploaded to a server, which matters when they show documents, IDs or family members.

The first HEIC file takes a moment longer, because the browser loads a decoder for the format. Safari on Apple devices can read HEIC directly and skips that step.

JPG, PNG or WebP

Choose JPG for photos you will upload to a form or send to someone. Almost everything accepts it.

Choose PNG when you need transparency or perfectly sharp edges, for example for a logo or a screenshot. PNG files of photos are large.

Choose WebP for pictures on your own website, where small files matter and you control what the page supports.

Make the iPhone save JPG instead

If you often need JPG, open Settings, go to Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. They take more storage than HEIC.

To keep HEIC on the phone but get JPG when copying to a computer, open Settings, go to Photos, and under Transfer to Mac or PC choose Automatic.

If the converted file is too large

A converted JPG keeps the full resolution of the photo and is often several megabytes. If the form has a size limit, run the JPG through the Image Compressor next and set the limit there.
