How to Remove the Background from a Product Photo
Updated:
A product on a clean background looks more professional and is what many marketplaces expect for the main image. You can cut the background out of a photo in a few seconds, and the result is much better when the photo and the mode suit each other.
Take a photo that is easy to cut out
Put the product on a plain surface whose colour is clearly different from the product. A white product on a white table gives the tool very little to work with.
Use soft, even light from a window or two lamps. Hard shadows are often kept as part of the product.
Fill the frame. A product that takes up most of the picture is cut out more accurately than a small one in the middle of a large scene.
Choose the mode
Person is for portraits and people. It keeps hair and shoulders clean.
Product or object is for photos of things. It looks for the most prominent item in the picture.
Drawing or logo is for artwork on a plain backdrop, such as a logo, an illustration or a scanned sketch. It is selected automatically when the picture has a plain border. Untick the option to keep only the main object if your artwork has several separate parts, such as a symbol next to a name.
Steps
- 1Open the Background Remover and choose the mode.
- 2Add your image and wait a few seconds. The first run downloads the AI model once; after that it starts quickly.
- 3Choose the background: transparent, white, or a colour of your own.
- 4Fix any mistakes with Touch up, then download the PNG.
Fixing the edges
No automatic cut-out is perfect. Erase removes leftover background, and Restore brings back parts of the product that were cut away. Set a small brush for edges and a large one for big areas.
Undo touch-ups returns to the automatic result if you want to start over.
Transparent PNG or white background
Download with a transparent background when you will place the product on a design, a banner or a coloured page.
Choose white when a marketplace asks for a white background. The file is still a PNG; if the listing requires JPG or a size limit, convert it with the Image Converter or the Image Compressor. JPG has no transparency, so pick the white background before converting.
