How to Make a Wi-Fi QR Code for Guests

Updated:

Reading a Wi-Fi password aloud, letter by letter, gets old quickly in a café, a shop or a guest room. A Wi-Fi QR code holds the network name and password, and a phone that scans it offers to connect in one tap.

What you need

You need three things from your router: the network name (SSID) exactly as it appears, including capital letters and spaces; the password; and the security type. Nearly all home and business networks today use WPA, WPA2 or WPA3, which are a single choice in the tool.

Steps

  1. 1Open the QR Code Generator and choose Wi-Fi.
  2. 2Type the network name and the password. Check both for typing mistakes; one wrong character and the code will not connect.
  3. 3Leave security on WPA/WPA2/WPA3 unless your network has no password. Tick Hidden network only if your router does not broadcast its name.
  4. 4Download PNG for a screen or SVG for printing.
  5. 5Scan the code with your own phone before you print it.

How guests use it

On recent iPhones and Android phones, guests open the camera, point it at the code and tap the notification that offers to join the network. No app is needed. On older phones a QR scanner app does the same job.

Think about security first

The code contains your password in readable form. Anyone who scans it, or photographs it, has the password. Treat a printed Wi-Fi code like the password written on a card.

For a business, create a separate guest network on the router and make the code for that one. Guests get internet access while your tills, printers and computers stay on a network they cannot reach.

When you change the password, the old code stops working. Make and print a new one.

Printing tips

Print the code at least 3 cm wide for a table card, and larger for a wall sign that people scan from a distance. Keep dark modules on a light background and leave a blank margin around the code.

If you add a logo to the middle, test the code again. A logo covers part of the pattern, and a code with a long password has less room to spare.

These codes are static. They do not expire and do not depend on this website to keep working.
